What Makes It Unique

A 300-mile self-supported Arctic ultra at -50°C.

The Course

A 300-mile (483km) self-supported winter ultra through the frozen Yukon wilderness of northern Canada. Runners pull sleds containing all their survival gear along the Yukon Quest sled dog trail — frozen rivers, boreal forest, and exposed mountain passes at temperatures that regularly hit -40°C. The course follows historic Gold Rush trails from Whitehorse toward Dawson City. There are no aid stations in the traditional sense — just remote checkpoints every 40-80km where runners can warm up, melt snow for water, and sleep on the floor of a wilderness cabin before pushing back into the darkness.

Lore & Trivia

The Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra is arguably the coldest non-polar foot race on earth. At -40°C, exposed skin freezes in minutes, water bottles become ice blocks, and the simple act of eating requires defrosting food against your body. The race follows the Yukon Quest dog sled route — a trail tested by the Gold Rush stampeders of 1898 and maintained by modern mushers. Runners pull everything they need on a sled: sleeping bag rated to -40, stove, fuel, food for days between checkpoints. The isolation is total: hours of running alone through boreal forest in darkness, northern lights overhead, wolves howling in the distance. Finishers describe it as the closest thing to a polar expedition that exists in competitive ultrarunning.

  • The coldest ultra on Earth — temperatures regularly reach -40°C.
  • Runners pull sleds with all survival gear.
  • Only 6 hours of daylight — most running in darkness.

At minus 40, the cold isn't an inconvenience. It's an active predator. You are prey.
