What Makes It Unique

A unique 3-person relay ultra through the Austrian Alps.

The Course

A team relay through the Stubai Alps above Innsbruck, Austria. Teams of three share a high-alpine course that crosses glacial valleys, ascends to mountain huts above 2,000m, and traverses ridgelines with views of the Inn Valley far below. The relay format means each runner covers roughly a third of the distance, but the sections are steep and technical — this is genuine Alpine terrain, not a flat exchange zone. The Nordkette cable car provides the only mechanical ascent; everything else is on foot.

Lore & Trivia

The Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival's relay format is unique in European mountain running — teams of three share a high-alpine course through the Stubai Alps above Innsbruck. The route crosses glacier-carved valleys, mountain huts, and technical ridgelines where the Nordkette cable car provides the only easy way up. Innsbruck has positioned itself as the trail running capital of Austria, and this event — part of a multi-day festival with races for all distances — is the centrepiece.

  • One of the few major trail races run as a 3-person relay.
  • Bad Gastein is famous for its thermal spas and waterfalls.
  • The relay format creates a unique team dynamic in an individual sport.
  • Established in 2018.
  • Total elevation gain: 5200m.

Innsbruck's trail festival turns the city into a mountain running carnival. The relay is the team event that makes it social.
